Attendance at a Junior High School means to be confronted with the challenges of a globalised world. This challenge is met by an extensive and intensive offer of lessons where English is used as the language of instruction, in the cross-curricular subject field of Global Studies, where topics with a particular European relevance are addressed.
Through the use of CLIL (Content and Integrated Learning) the pupils of the various Junior High Schools acquire English language skills that surpass those gained in 'regular' modern language lessons. The aim is to compliment and support the traditional language lessons through the use of CLIL across the curriculum.
Supported by English Native Speaker Teachers in the subject field of Global Studies pupils learn to use English both as a tool for learning and working, as well as a form of communication. Through the use of new communication and information technology in the subject of Global Studies, the pupils are inspired to address worldwide topics and are prepared for the later challenges of daily working life. Questions from the fields of nature, philosophy and social studies, as well as economic and cultural studies are addressed.
Exchange between teaching staff and school classes is made easier by networking with partner schools in other countries and working on common projects that foster a better understanding of regional and global inter-relations.
- Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) in the subject of Global Studies, with a focus on natural and social sciences
- Information and Communication Technologies (ICT)
- Artistic focus and project work
- Increased authentic language input through team teaching with English Native Speaker Teachers (NSTs)
- Depending on available resources, optional tuition in a second modern language
The subject field Global Studies is taught alongside regular middle school subjects from Year 5 onwards. This area is comprised of 6 lessons using a CLIL approach whereby the lessons are instead of traditional subjects and not supplementary.
In Years 5 and 6 the area of Global Studies is made up of the following subjects: 3 lessons of science, 2 lessons of social studies and 1 lesson of arts. In Years 7 and 8 the emphasis is on science, therefore 4 lessons of science, 1 lesson of social studies and 1 lesson of arts.
Exchange programmes and intensive language course weeks abroad are envisioned for pupils in Years 7 and 8.
Language flexibility and an interest in the field of Global Studies is clarified in an interview (Information Talk) with prospective pupils.
